Miami-Dade stretches from Biscayne Bay to the edge of the Everglades, and its water problems change with the ground. Surge and king tides hit the coast, while inland neighborhoods deal with a high water table, heavy rain and aging septic systems.
Miami-Dade covers more than 2,000 square miles, with Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic to the east, the Florida Keys to the south and Everglades National Park to the west. A third of the county lies inside that park. Its drinking water comes from the Biscayne Aquifer, and groundwater is typically only a few feet below the surface.
Along the coast, the threat is water pushed in from the sea. Irma’s surge in 2017 reached 4 to 6 feet above ground in parts of the county, especially along Biscayne Bay. King tides add a smaller, repeating version of the same problem each spring and fall, and the county notes that sea level rise is pushing coastal groundwater higher.
Inland does not mean dry. In southern and western areas near water bodies, a 2018 county report found the water table can be within 24 inches of the surface. When groundwater is that high, heavy rain has almost nowhere to soak in. Hurricane Irene in 1999 dropped close to 15 inches at Homestead Air Reserve Base and about 11 inches at Miami International Airport, and some residential flooding lasted a week. The October 2000 storm was worse, with up to 18 inches in a single day.
Hurricane Andrew in 1992 is remembered for its Category 5 winds, which destroyed about 49,000 homes in the county and damaged 108,000 more. Homestead was the hardest-hit community.
Countywide, about half of all homes were built before 1980, and roughly a third are in buildings of 20 or more units. That gives Miami-Dade two very different kinds of leak. In high-rises, water from one unit travels down through ceilings and walls into others. In older single-family neighborhoods like much of Miami Gardens, aging supply lines and water heaters fail inside houses where no one is living below to notice.
Septic adds a third. The county estimates around 120,000 septic systems are still in use, with about 9,000 already vulnerable to compromise or failure and roughly 13,500 projected by 2040. A backup from a failing system is a sewage cleanup job, not ordinary drying.
