When wind lifts shingles or blows out a soffit, rain gets into the attic and ceilings below. Call, and soaked insulation comes out and the rooms get dried.

South Florida Restoration Co gets water damage restoration underway in Palm City, the unincorporated community west of Stuart between Florida’s Turnpike and the South Fork of the St. Lucie River. Most homes here are single-family houses from the 1980s and 1990s. Water gets in through a roof the wind damaged, from rain that the older drainage in Old Palm City can’t carry off, or from a pipe or fitting that has been in the wall for 30 years.

On October 9, 2024, tornadoes in Hurricane Milton’s outer rainbands crossed Palm City. One touched down in the woods south of the SW Martin Highway and I-95 interchange, flipped a tractor trailer and headed north into St. Lucie County. Another, rated EF-2 where it was strongest, came north along Citrus Boulevard with winds of 85 to 105 mph, damaged a gas station canopy near SW Martin Highway and SW 42nd Avenue, crossed the Turnpike and went out over the St. Lucie River as a waterspout. The weather service found mostly minor damage in the subdivisions east of the Turnpike because most of those homes are concrete block.
Minor roof damage still lets rain in long after the wind is gone. Where a soffit blows out, rain is driven sideways into the attic. Where shingles lift, water runs under them to the roof deck. Soaked attic insulation sits on the ceiling drywall and keeps it wet, so the insulation comes out and the ceiling and walls below get readings to sort what can be dried from what can’t. Drying starts once the roof is covered. The guide to what a dry-out looks like explains the equipment in the house and why it runs.
Martin County has called the drainage in parts of Old Palm City dated and failed. Residents told WPTV that water and puddles sat for days and, in places, came into homes. In May 2018 a blocked drain left up to 15 inches on Sunset Trail off Mapp Road. The county has been replacing pipes, adding catch basins and regrading swales there.
Once yard water crosses the threshold, it’s flood cleanup. Wet carpet and pad come up, the lower drywall is cut away, and the floor is cleaned before any drying. Martin County’s Old Palm City septic-to-sewer project is planned to serve 1,078 homes. If your house is still on septic, the Martin County page goes over what a backup after heavy rain means.
Close to two thirds of Palm City’s homes date to the 1980s and 1990s, and the median house was built in 1993. Nine in ten households own, and about three in four homes are detached houses. At that age the valves, the supply lines and the pipe inside the walls and under the slab are often original.
A pinhole leak in a wall or a slab leak doesn’t always make a puddle. It gives itself away as a warm spot on tile over a hot water line, a baseboard that’s swelling or one room that smells musty. Moisture readings and a thermal camera find the wet area, so only that section gets opened. Signs of hidden water damage lists what to watch for.

On the call, the useful details are where the water came in (the roof, the yard or a pipe) and whether the roof is covered yet. Mention septic too, if the house has it.

Martin County described the drainage in parts of Old Palm City as dated and failed, and residents told WPTV that standing water lasted days and reached inside homes.
About 62 percent of Palm City's homes went up in that span, and half of all homes were built in 1993 or earlier, by 2024 Census estimates.
The South Fork of the St. Lucie River runs along Palm City's southeast side, and water makes up roughly 15 percent of the community's area.

Often, if the drying starts within a day or two of the roof being covered. Readings across the room map the wet boards. Boards that cupped slightly can settle back as they dry, while boards that crowned, buckled or pulled loose usually have to come up.
No. Once the roof is tarped and rain can't get back in, water can be pulled out and drying can start inside. Waiting weeks for the permanent roof leaves ceilings, walls and floors wet that whole time, and more ends up torn out.
