Sunrise water damage restoration, for the condo buildings, Springtree and the streets around Sawgrass Mills, starts with a call to South Florida Restoration Co. The city began in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village, under 2 square miles, and annexed its way west to the Everglades edge, so storm water and sewer trouble look different depending on where the call comes from.
Sawgrass Mills and the low ground out west
The west side has a flooding record that’s easy to check. In June 2017, after nearly a week of heavy rain, the worst flooding in Broward was in Sunrise, Weston and Davie. The mall closed for several days with its lot and entrances flooded, low streets nearby had 6 to 8 inches of water, and most swales and lakes went over their banks into the yards next to them. The same lot flooded during Eta in 2020, again in May 2022 and again on April 12, 2023.
A city stormwater pump station protects thousands of acres of homes and businesses, the mall included, and in 2021 the city asked for federal money to replace it as it neared the end of its useful life. A lake over its bank carries yard runoff and street grit. If it reached the slab, that’s flood cleanup: soaked carpet comes up, the bottom of the walls gets cut out, and the slab gets washed down before the air movers go in.
When the storm drains and the sewer both run full
Eta dropped about 11 inches on Sunrise in a day and a night. The city said its storm and sanitary sewer systems were taking two to three times their normal flow, with many facilities overloaded by 6 to 12 inches of extra water, and that drainage depended on canal levels set downstream by the South Florida Water Management District and the drainage districts.
A sewer line that full has nowhere to send what goes down your drains. In a ground-floor condo or a slab house, what you notice first is a tub, shower or floor drain gurgling or filling with dirty water. That’s Category 3 water, not a leak. What to do in the first hour of a sewage backup covers keeping people clear and stopping water use until the line drains.
Leaks in 1970s and 1980s condo buildings

Roughly 6 in 10 homes in Sunrise went up in the 1970s and 1980s, and about a third are in complexes of 20-plus units. In a building that age, the leak usually starts at a water heater in a utility closet, a supply line under a sink or an air handler whose drain pan overflowed. Water follows the slab and the plumbing walls, so the unit below often sees it first as a ceiling stain. If the water is coming down from upstairs, start with a leak from the condo above, and if the AC closet is the source, AC leak water damage shows where it travels.
