Pompano Beach Water Damage Cleanup and Drying

Rain from cities upstream drains through Pompano's canals on its way to the Intracoastal. Call, and whatever the backed-up water soaked is pulled out or cleaned and dried.

South Florida Restoration Co gets water damage cleanup started in Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point, in barrier island condos and the block houses inland. Call when a canal overflows, a king tide reaches the garage or the unit upstairs starts leaking.

Water from the canals

A swollen drainage ditch spills through a chain link fence and floods the backyard of a single story block house.

The Pompano Canal and Cypress Creek Canal collect rain from a wide stretch of north Broward before it reaches Pompano. In a long, heavy storm they fill faster than they can empty into the Intracoastal, and water backs up into swales, side streets, then yards and garages near the banks. By then it has run across lawns and pavement for miles.

A crew treats that as contaminated water, not a clean leak. Soaked insulation, drywall and carpet pad get pulled, the slab and remaining walls are washed down, and only then does drying start. That’s the flood cleanup order for canal water.

King tides on A1A and Riverside Drive

On the biggest king tides, water has washed over parts of Canal Drive and A1A, and a king tide once put about a foot of water in a parking garage on Riverside Drive. Ground-floor units, lobbies, garages and storage rooms near the water take it first. Salt left in drywall and wood keeps drawing moisture back in, so those get washed before they’re dried. Boxes and stored furniture that sat in it usually go to the curb.

Beach condos closed for the season

So many beachfront units sit empty for months that a cracked fitting, an old water heater or a clogged condensate drain line can leak for weeks. The water works down through the slab into the neighbor’s unit, and someone from management has to open the door and close the valve. If water is coming into your unit, start with what to do when water comes from upstairs.

Houses from the 1950s and 1960s

West of the beach, many of Pompano’s houses are postwar block homes. A lot still have jalousie windows that let wind-driven rain in, and some have terrazzo under carpet or tile laid later. Terrazzo takes on little water, but the carpet, pad and tack strip on top hold water against it, and the baseboards and lower walls soak it up. Those get pulled or dried; the terrazzo usually needs only a cleaning.

The Pompano Beach ZIP codes we cover include Lighthouse Point and the barrier island condos. Don’t see your ZIP? Call anyway and we’ll check your address.

When you call, say whether the water came off the canal, up from the street, in with the tide or from inside the building. Canal or tide water means different gear and a different cleanup than a burst line.

Pompano Beach's usual water problems

01

Canals that carry other cities' rain

The city explains that the Pompano Canal and the Cypress Creek Canal drain large basins that include other cities, and all of that stormwater reaches the Intracoastal by way of Pompano Beach.

02

Tides that slow the drains

When heavy rain falls during a high tide, the higher water in the Intracoastal slows the flow out of the city's stormwater system, and king tides each year flood the lowest streets.

03

Beach condos, many left empty

Nearly half the city's housing is in buildings of 20 units or more, and about 10,200 homes, roughly one in six, are kept as seasonal places, according to 2024 Census estimates.

04

Postwar houses inland

A third of Pompano's homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, by the same Census estimates.

FAQ

Pompano Beach questions we hear

Is Lighthouse Point covered?

Yes. Lighthouse Point's ZIP code, 33064, is covered with the rest of Pompano Beach.

Rain came in through my jalousie windows during a storm. What gets checked?

The wall below each window, the sill and the floor along that wall. Jalousie louvers let wind-driven rain through even when they're closed, and the water runs down inside the wall, so the drywall and baseboard there get moisture readings before anything is painted or replaced.

Does canal flood water take longer to clean up than a pipe leak?

Usually, yes. A clean pipe leak can often be dried in place, but canal water carries runoff from the streets and yards upstream, so soaked drywall, carpet and pad get pulled and the floors and walls are cleaned before the drying even starts.
