Tide water coming up the drains
The city told the state that rain at high tide gets worse when waterway water flows backward through outfall pipes onto roads and swales, and it planned backflow valves for at least 19 outfalls.

Dania Beach sits between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport next door and the Dania Cut-off Canal and coastal wetland along its edges. South Florida Restoration Co starts water damage restoration jobs in Dania Beach for ground-floor condos, mobile homes, rentals and houses near the canals. Tell us where the water came from, and we’ll start the cleanup.

Dania Beach averages about nine feet above sea level, and its wetland lakes drain into tidal canals. In a request for state funding, the city explained that when heavy rain falls on a high tide, canal water runs backward through the outfall pipes and comes up onto roads and swales, so the street floods from below as well as from the sky. It planned backflow valves for at least 19 outfalls, from 8 inches to 72 inches across. King tides and street flooding explains the tide side of it.
Water pushed up from a storm drain or a canal is outside water, often brackish, and it doesn’t get dried in place like a clean pipe leak. Padding and carpet get hauled out with any drywall that wicked it up, and whatever stays gets scrubbed before the equipment goes in.
During the April 12, 2023 storm, the National Weather Service noted 15 to 20 inches across the Hollywood and Dania Beach area, and its surveyors later measured 1 to 2 feet of standing water on several Dania Beach streets, parks and open lots. The Fort Lauderdale page on the April 2023 flood has the rest of that day. The president of Meadowbrook Lakes Condominiums told Local 10 that 45 first-floor units there were ruined, residents stayed out for at least seven months, and cars speeding down flooded streets push waves of water toward the buildings.
For a ground-floor unit, a wave like that can be what gets over the threshold. Once it’s in, getting it out fast decides how much gets rebuilt later. Emergency water removal pulls the standing water first, then the wet materials come out and drying starts.
About one in eight homes in Dania Beach is a mobile home. On the night of April 12, 2023, an EF0 tornado with winds near 85 mph crossed a mobile home community east of I-95, south of the airport. NBC 6 reported about a dozen homes damaged at Ocean Waterway, some with roofs torn off, in a park where many owners are winter residents.
When a roof or a wall panel is opened up, rain gets into the ceiling panels, the insulation in the walls and the floor below. Drying a mobile home means opening those spaces and checking under the floor, where water collects out of sight.

FAQ
It does. That wave is street water, carrying whatever was on the road and in the drains. Wet carpet and pad usually come out, swollen drywall gets trimmed back to clean, dry board, and the tile or slab is sanitized ahead of any drying.
